We’re welcoming back Student Criminal Law Sessions at Dandenong Magistrates Court in 2025

We're working with Monash Faculty of Law to bring back student criminal law sessions in 2025. This much-loved program gives law students a practical way to learn legal skills through a social justice lens.

We are thrilled to announce the return of our Professional Practice Criminal Law Sessions at the Dandenong Magistrates Court, recommencing in the first half of this year. This marks an important milestone as we resume this valuable program after its temporary suspension due to COVID-19.

What to expect

Our student participants will have the unique opportunity to:

  • Assist clients at the court under professional supervision
  • Represent clients in court hearings
  • Work on diverse criminal cases
  • Interact with Victoria Police
  • Strive to achieve the best possible outcomes for clients

Our experienced lawyers will conduct each of these sessions under their expert supervision, ensuring a safe and educational environment for our students. Students will be able to build practical legal skills while helping more clients access justice through representation.

Equipping students with legal skills

The resumption of these sessions is crucial for several reasons:

  • It provides hands-on experience for our law students in real-world criminal law scenarios
  • It offers vital legal assistance to clients who might otherwise have to represent themselves
  • It strengthens the connection between legal education and practical application
  • It contributes to the broader community by improving access to justice
  • It helps emerging lawyers develop their understanding of social justice

Learn while making a difference

We’re pleased to have partnered with Monash Faculty of Law to bring this program back in 2025. Last time we offered this program, we saw first-hand how placements like these provide students not only a chance to practice the law, but a chance to understand social justice through a legal lens. This program represents both a learning opportunity for our students and a chance to make a real difference in our community. By assisting clients who might otherwise lack representation, we’re upholding our commitment to ensuring everyone in our community can access legal help.
